Lot 79: - Arthur Hughes , 1832-1915 at the church gate oil on canvas
Victorian & Edwardian Art
July 15, 2008
London, United Kingdom
Description: oil on canvas
PROPERTY FROM AN AMERICAN PRIVATE COLLECTION
This picture does not appear in Leonard Roberts' catalogue of Arthur Hughes work. However its similarity to Faith (sold in these rooms 16 April 1986, lot 156) suggests that it also dates from the early 1890s. Both pictures depict the same model wearing the same hat tied with a ribbon. In Faith she sits piously on a church pew listening to the sermon, whilst the present picture depicts her outside the church after the service. Behind the girl is an ancient yew tree, traditionally grown in English churchyards to symbolise the Resurrection due to its ability to rejuvenate itself.
Dimensions: measurements note 75 by 53.5 cm., 29 ½ by 21 in.
