Arthur Lismer 1885 - 1969 Canadian oil on board Red Pine A07F-E05160-001 12 x 16 inches 30.5 x 40.6 centimeters signed and on verso titled on a 1919 exhibition label Literature:Lois Darroch, Bright Land: A Warm Look at Arthur Lismer, 1981, page 15 Provenance:The Art Emporium, Vancouver, 1972 Private Collection, Victoria, BC Lismer immigrated from England in 1911, coming to Toronto to work at the commercial art firm of Grip Ltd. He quickly became part of the art scene there, joining the Arts and Letters Club and becoming friends with the future members of the Group of Seven. After seeing a group of early sketches that Tom Thomson brought back from a trip up the Mississagi River, he was eager to get out into the wilderness. Between 1913 and 1919, Lismer made at least three trips to Georgian Bay and one to Algonquin Park, and the untamed beauty he saw there was a revelation for him. His description of Georgian Bay, with "great, high rocks tumbled in confused masses and crowned with leaning pines, turned away in ragged disarray from the west wind, presenting a strange pattern against the sky and water..." could easily be a description of Red Pine. This richly coloured painting with its wind-gnarled trees embodies the romantic spirit of the Group of Seven. E30000-40000
