Notes: VARIOUS PROPERTIES
As of 1822 Marie the Princess of Orleans (1813-1839) received drawing and painting lessons from Ary Scheffer, who was allready at that time famous for his work and one of the leading painters in Paris. She was his favourite student. Shortly after her early death in 1839 Scheffer wrote: "Elle avait le sentiment aristocratique, mais etait nullement princesse." In this portrait of 1833 Scheffer painted her as an artist, not as a princess, standing next to a table with a lithographic stone, a drawing pen in her hand. On the easel behind her is a portrait of a dog. It was common knowledge that Marie had more interest in fine arts than in society life. Marie Princess of Orleans was the second daughter of King Louis Philippe. She would also become an accomplished sculptor and some of her sculptures are kept in the palace of Versailles, the Dordrechts Museum and in the Amsterdam Historisch Museum.
Another version of the present lot is in the collection of Count Würtenberg, in Althausen, Germany. Marie married Alexander, Count of Würtenberg in 1837. Sheffer also used to make smaller versions of his portraits of the royal family, either for family members, for himself or for admirers. Two similar drawings are in the Dordrechts Museum (see: Ewals, op.cit., p. 175).
Christie's charges a Buyer's premium calculated at 23.205% of the hammer price for each lot with a value up to 110,000. Buyer's Premium is calculated on this basis for each lot individually.
