Condition:

moderate amount of surface dirt, wear at corners and edges, wear to surface in some areas, paint loss visible in upper area, nail puncture visible in upper center. Examination under blacklight shows oxidized varnish, minimal amount fluoresces, mostly spots in peripheral areas of the painting.

Catalogue Note:

This composition is consistent with many small capricci scenes by Francesco Guardi. Other capricci showing sequences of ruined arches are cited in Morassi no. 958 (Fig. 849), no. 961 (Fig. 847), no. 962 (Fig. 859), no. 963 (Fig. 857; Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris), and no. 964 (Fig. 853; Chicago Art Institute). With exception of no. 958 all are similarly on panel, and all except no. 964 are similarly in an upright format.
