Description: ATTRIBUTED TO THÉODORE GÉRICAULT
(french 1791-1824)
STUDY OF A HORSE''S HEAD
Pencil on paper
Sheet size: 9 5/16 x 10 5/8 in. (23.7 x 27cm)
provenance:
Knoedler Gallery, New York, New York (label verso).
Private Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Framed and matted, with tape pieces at top edge verso affixed to the overmat, which is inscribed on front, at bottom, 'GERICAULT.' The drawing itself is in fine condition, although the sheet has areas with damage, largely at left. The damage to the sheet itself includes creases - both hard and soft, tears, discoloration, uneven toning and some scuffing. Specifically there is an approx. 1 1/2 inch (at largest area) shaped tear emanating from outer left edge of sheet which has been partially restored. There are several smaller tears at outer left edge of sheet, the largest of which is approx. 1/2 inch long and an approx. 3/8 x 3/8 inch loss to outer left edge of sheet, just above center. There is a small fold at upper left corner of sheet and some reddish discoloration (origin unknown) near upper left corner. There are clusters of pinpoint brown spots within upper left outer edge. There is pale mount staining, areas of uneven pale discoloration and slight foxing. Nearly all of the condition issues associated with this lot are outside of the actual drawn image.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
