22 enveloppes.

Correspondance d'Auguste Brizeux à Alfred de Vigny. Le "prince des bardes bretons", né à Lorient, vint étudier le droit à Paris à l'âge de 20 ans et y fréquenta les jeunes peintres - Eugène Devéria et Tony Johannot notamment - et littérateurs. Il rencontra Alfred de Vigny vers 1829 et les deux hommes se lièrent d'une amitié durable, Vigny devenant pour Brieux un précieux mentor et protecteur, Brizeux se révélant être, dit-on, le "disciple préféré" de Vigny, comme le montre les lettres, parfois très longues, qu'ils échangèrent pendant une trentaine d'années : "Je vous prie, Monsieur, de bien croire ceci, que , tout ami que je suis de Shakespeare, c'est pour vous surtout que j'aimerais à combattre. Et puis, vous le savez, la gloire des morts, toute grande qu'elle soit, est celle qu'on envie le moins : ce triste bonheur, vous en jouirez un jour. " (11 octobre 1828) ; "Mon cher Académicien, c'est dans un jour, comme le 29 janvier, qu'on regrette d'être au fond d'une campagne et à cent-trente lieues de Paris. Ç'a été, ce jour-là, une grande fête pour tous vos amis ; et, certes, elle n'eut pas été moindre pour moi qui compte parmi les plus anciens et, j'ose dire, les plus fidèles. […] Ce que je vous dis tout à la hâte, tandis que le facteur en sabots attend près de moi ma réponse, pour l'emporter dans son petit sac de cuir. Mais je n'ai pas voulu tarder d'un jour. " (2 février 1846 ; Vigny a inscrit en tête : 4 février 1846. Lett. de Brizeux sur ma réception à l'Académie Fse") ; "Cher ami, lorsque vous êtes venu visiter un ami malade, il était avec Barbier, sous les arcades Rivoli, cherchant plutôt que trouvant un peu de chaleur. J'ai fort regretté de n'avoir pu vous serrer la main, mais nous aurions échangé peu de paroles. Depuis plusieurs semaines la voix me manque : lupi Moerim videre priores… Décidément il faut quitter les bons amis de Paris et aller chercher ce grand ami appelé le Soleil… si lui-même est encore de ce monde. " (15 mars 1858, quelques semaines avant la mort de Brizeux à Montpellier ; Vigny a noté en tête : "dernier billet").

"J'aime à voir une de vos charmantes pages dédiée à Mr de Courcy. Si vous le voyez, rappelez-lui la soirée que j'ai passée avec lui et madame de Courcy au milieu des sauvages de l'Amérique. Ils avaient à leur ceinture des chevelures scalpées sur le crâne de leurs frères, leurs femmes exécutaient la danse de l'ours et chantaient la chanson sinistre qui précède le repas des cannibales, en souriant comme les tigresses qui vont manger de l'homme. " (30 mars 1852).
On joint en outre un court poème autographe de Brizeux ("Chaque jour, vers midi, par un ciel chaud et lourd, […]" (s. d. ; une p. in-12), un autre poème du même recopié par Vigny ("Hommes guerriers - La Paix armée. I Un monstre lentement a grandi sur la glace […] 28 février 1854" ; 3 p. in-folio) et les quatre premiers feuillets de la deuxième édition des Bretons (1847).
Quelques manques, déchirures et pliures marginaux et centraux, certains atteignant le texte. Quelques brunissures et trous d'épingles.
