Notes: Few exhibitions have influenced artistic practice so decisively as the 1907 Cézanne retrospective at the Paris Salon d¡¯Automne. In its wake, younger artists - including Herbin - shifted directions radically, opening up the arteries of Modernism. Trois Arbres aux bords d¡¯un sentier is a prime example of Herbin¡¯s iconic Cubist period, and a virtual translation onto the picture surface of Cézanne¡¯s famous call to treat nature with the "cylinder, the cone and the sphere." The present work was exhibited at the Galerie Clovis Sagot, one of Picasso¡¯s first art dealers, in 1914.
