Condition / Notes: This very scarce volume is one of thirty copies of this title printed, according to a note from the printer, which is included in this lot. Laid in with this volume are numerous documents and correspondence retained by the consignor, including three letters from the author to John Lentz, a scholar of Back who participated in an expedition down the Back River. These letters detail Lentz' obtainment of the title, and confirmation of the limited number of copies, as well as the continued conversation between Lentz and Pares about writings related to Back.
This softcover volume, with pictorial design on the wrappers and portrait of Back on the rear cover, is mildly edgeworn and displays mild shelfwear. The binding is firm, and a small bump appears in the upper fore corner of the text block. The interior of this volume is clean and bright, richly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs and prints, including prints of Back's own artwork. A fold-out print of a map, drawn by Back, of the Arctic Land Expedition of 1833-34 is also present, in excellent condition. The volume and envelope of related ephemera are housed in a pristine clamshell case, with leather spine label and gilt lettering and ruling to the spine.
