Lot 45: Automobile Club Show. ca. 1900
November 18, 2012
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: Artist: W. S. ROGERS Size: 20 1/4 x 30 1/8 in./51.5 x 76.4 cm Waterlow & Sons, London This advertisement for an early British auto show takes aim at the potential female motorist. With her sash and scarf flapping behind her and wings attached to the bow in her unmussed coif, she appears to be ready to take flight. An interesting, and more-likely-than-not successful approach, especially reinforcing the role of women in early automobile and bicycle posters: not only was the machine a liberating force for them, but it was meant to convey the ease with which the new contraption could be driven.
Condition Report: B/ Slight tears & stains at folds & edges; recreated margins.
