The origins of the Norton Commando can be traced back to the late 1940s when the Model 7 Twin was first launched at the Earl's Court Show in London, England. It was designed by Bert Hopwood with a capacity of 497cc and initially the new models were for export only.

The twin cylinder design evolved into the 650cc Dominator and 750cc Atlas before being launched as the 750cc Commando in 1967. The main improvement in this latest machine was that the engine and gearbox were isolated from the frame by special rubber mountings. This was to alleviate the acute vibration problems of the earlier models. Although initially dismissed by the skeptics as merely a revamped Atlas, the Commando soon found favor with all who were privileged to have a test ride. From this moment the Commando became a success, as underlined by the presentation of the 'Motor Cycle of the Year' award for no fewer than five consecutive years, organized by Motor Cycle News.

The first 850cc machines were launched in April 1973. The engines of these bikes had similar power output to the 750cc models, but imposed less stress on the more vulnerable components thus making for a more reliable yet equally spirited ride.

Offered for sale by a Christie's member of staff, this beautifully presented, nicely restored, matching numbers Commando is currently California registered and ready to be enjoyed. Attesting to its reliability and ride ability, this Norton won the inaugural Vmoto-sanctioned Regularity Street Class at Laguna Seca Raceway in November 2003. With service records and invoices dating back to the 1980s and performance to match its looks, this is a great opportunity to acquire the 'unapproachable' Norton 850 Commando.
