Notes: The present painting is comparable to another small copper of The Adoration of the Magi which Gherardi attributes to Passerotti in her monograph (A. Gherardi, Bartolomeo Passerotti pittore (1529-1592), Rimini 1990, pp. 166-167, cat. no. 16, reproduced). Gherardi dates that copper to circa 1572 or shortly after, further noting that it replicates a lost fresco by Federico Zuccaro in the Church of S. Eligio degli Orefici known through an engraving.
We are grateful to Dott. Angela Gherardi who, based on images, confirms the present painting to be by Passerotti and believes it to have been painted during the early part of his career.
