BEAUMONT, G. de & A. de TOCQUEVILLE. Système pénitentiaire aux États-Unis, et de son application en France. 3e éd. Brux., 1837. 2 vols. (4), 330, (1); (4), 306 pp. W. 5 fold. plates. Sm-8°. Half felt bind. w. red labels. Beaumont and Tocqueville's study of the American prison system was first published in France in 1833, followed by American, British, and German editions all in that same year. A second French edition was issued in 1836. The two Frenchmen were sent by their government to study American prisons, and spent a year touring the United States in 1831 and 1832, visiting prisons from New York to Virginia. Upon their return they produced this report, the most comprehensive up to that time. They review several American prisons, compare various approaches, and provide statistics. The report was influential, and recommended the Pennsylvania system of solitary confinement. - Sabin, 4190
