8 o. Illustrations in text. (Some occasional pale foxing.) Original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened (spine lightly soiled). FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT ISSUE, of Becquerel's first extensive investigation in physics. From 1874-1877, Becquerel was a student at the 쳌cole des Ponts et Chauss‚es. During this early period, Becquerel's studies dealt with the "Faraday effect," the rotation of plane-polarized light in a magnetic field. "Having concentrated his efforts in the area of magneto-optics, [Becquerel] thought that he had deduced the relationship between rotary magnetic power and the index of refraction... Later, however, he found that his conception was wrong, because the law for magnetic substances proved to be different for that for diamagnetic ones and also different for dissolved magnetic substances (Magill, ed. The Nobel Prize Winners: Physics, p.58). [ With :] BECQUEREL, Henri. M‚moire sur l'‚tude des radiations infra-rouges au moyen des ph‚nomenes de phosphorescence. Offprint from: Annales de Chimie et de Physique, T. XXX. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1883. 8 o. Large engraved folding plate at end. Modern blue wrappers incorporating portions of the original wrappers, uncut and unopened. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. (2).
