Based on sensually experienced realities Bellmer's oeuvre has reached an extraordinarily plastic and aesthetic quality. (...) Bellmer is an admirable illustrator, he is undoubtedly the greatest illustrator in contemporary art. He is always less interested in overall effects than in details which he wants to emphasize and work on until perfection. His at times cobweb-like line, a tender rapture in reality's soul, is so justified through its exact determination that it wouldn't be possible to erase or change even one of the lines on these sheets without completely modifying the work.(...) These works - inspired by an enhanced sensuality - don't settle for a frivolous touch of surfaces, but transcend their objects in a philosophical way, throwing a light on hidden causal relationships in the world of the Eros and revealing anxieties and troubles which make them appear as a world of incomprehensible inevitability. (Translated from Sarane Alexandrian, Hans Bellmer, Berlin 1972, p. 7).
