Description: Title: The Sun-Bonnet Babies
Author: Bertha L. Corbett (Melcher)
Publisher: Bertha L. Corbett (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Printing Year: 1900

Condition/Details: Bound in olive paper-covered boards, with an illustrated front board, this antique volume is a scarce, author-signed, limited, first edition of this author's first book. An original signature and inscription of author Bertha L. Corbett appears on the second flyleaf. This page states "No. 6 of one hundred signed and colored copies of the first edition." The inscription is dated "June 3 - 1900." The work features many hand-colored illustrations.

Bertha L. Corbett was born in Denver and studied art at the School of Fine Art in Minneapolis. She continued her schooling under Howard Pyle in Philadelphia and then completed her education in Chicago. Although most of her time was devoted to the sunbonnet babies, she was a recognized artist of water colors, oil portraits and miniatures upon ivory. Bertha gave chalk talks to club women, school teachers, and school children and orphans in institutions. (biography courtesy of sunbonnetsue.com)

The volume shows external age/wear with rubbing to the extremities of the boards, light soiling of the boards, lacking spine cover, and displaying smalls tape remnants on the front board. The volume is solidly bound with lightly age-toned pages. The hand-colored illustrations display well, remaining clean. The book measures approximately 8" x 7 3/4" and is unpaginated. A few vintage newspaper clippings about the author are also included.
