303 by 364mm

PROVENANCE
Bequest of Eva Boros, Bill Brandt's first wife, to the present owner.
LITERATURE
Brandt, B., 1936, cropped 'portrait' format version reproduced as cover, full 'landscape' format version reproduced pl. 28 as 'An Ascot Grandstand/La journeé de Royal Hunt Cup à Ascot'.
Brandt, B., 1966, cropped version reproduced pl. 7 as 'Coach Party, Royal Hunt Cup Day, Ascot'.
Brandt, B., 1977, cropped version reproduced pl. 7a as 'Coach Party, Royal Hunt Cup Day, Ascot'.
Brandt, B., 1983, cropped version reproduced pl. 77 as 'Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot'.
Warburton, N. & Jay, B., 1999, cropped version reproduced pl. 37 as 'Epsom Derby 1935'.
NOTE
This print was the cover image to The English at Home of 1936, Brandt's first book of photographs. The cover image is a detail cropped from the original negative; the full image was reproduced as a plate in the text. The print offered here is cropped from the original negative along the right edge - the only figure not observing the race has been edited out of the picture.
The print is flush-mounted on exactly the same board as the photograph by Brandt in the previous lot, suggesting that it too may date from the time of the exhibition at Marx House.
