BINDINGS -- GEMME D'ARTI ITALIANE. Anno II. Milano & Venezia, P. Ripamonte Carpano, n.d. (=1846). (12), 118, (6) pp. W. cold. lithogr. title-p. and 24 full-p. engr. cut by various artists. 4°. Cont. (or.?) red velvet binding w. elaborate woodcarving work on both sides and on spine; centered on the front side the conjunct coats of arms of the Houses of Habsburg and Parma, flanked by putti holding trumpets; white watered silk endpapers and paste downs, a.e.g. In wooden box. (Wood carving has some minor blemishes, but is actually very well preserved, paste downs a bit damp wrinkled). The 'Gemme d'arti Italiane' was published annually from 1845 to 1861 by Paolo Ripamonte Carpano, a publisher in Milan who also had a stationery shop and commercial affairs in Venice. In this period the Lombardo-Veneto area was subject to the Habsburg domination, and all people involved in publishing often used their activities to disseminate the ideas of the Risorgimento. 24 Italian works of art by various artists, for the greater part paintings, are being commented by various authors.
