Book of Maps: The American Military Pocket Atlas
Being an Approved Collection of Correct Maps, Both General and Particular, of the British Colonies; Especially Those Which Now Are, or Probably May Be the Theatre of War. R. Sayer and J. Bennet, London, 1776. Bound in 1/4 leather with paper boards. Contains the eight-page introductory materials consisting of the title page, dedication to Gov. Pownall, advertisement, and list of maps, plus the six folded maps, with linen hinges along folds. The maps are: 1) North America; 2) The West Indies; 3) The North Colonies; 4) The Middle Colonies; 5) The Southern Colonies; and 6) Lake Champlain. One of the most important atlases of the Revolution, it was designed to be purchased and carried by British officers in their pocket, but its larger size dictated that most carried it in a "holster". Thus it came to be known as the "holster atlas". Gov. George Powhall urged its publication with essential information for the pursuit of military objectives. Maps are colored in outline. Binding is scuffed. Page 4 of the prefactory material is clipped at the top right corner about 2" along each edge, not affecting text. Paper is toned. Maps are foxed, but in good condition. Very good condition. Overall book size is 8 1/2" x 11". Two maps are approximately 13 3/4" x 19"; and four maps are approximately 20 1/2" x 27. From the Collection of General W.H. Vanderlinden, Jr., late of Hickory, North Carolina.
