Worinnen die landschafften Phonicien, Celesyrien, Commagene, Pierien, Cyrestica, Seleucis, Cassiotis, Chalibonitis, Chalcis, Abilene, Apamene, Laodicis, Palmyrene, etc., Neben den landern Perea oder Ober-Jordan, Galilaa, das absonderliche Palestina, Judaa und Idumea begriffen sind, 2 parts in one, Nuremberg, Johann Hofmann, 1688-89, additional eng. title (with imprint Amsterdam, Jacob von Meursen, 1681, as usual), first title printed in red and black (with single circular library ink stamp towards lower right corner), text in double column, thirty-nine eng. plates (including ten double-page or folding eng. maps and plans, twenty-three double-page or folding views etc., and six single-page plts), numerous half-page engravings, folding view of Carmel (facing p.59 to first part) with very small hole to image (approx 8mm x 2mm), contents generally in clean condition, contemp. vellum with yapp fore-edges, a few minor marks, folio Roehricht, Bibliotheca geographica Palaestinae, 1171. The second German edition of Dapper's major work on the Middle East, first published in Dutch in 1677, and in German in 1681 (for which see Blackmer 449 and Atabey 322). Olfert Dapper (1635-1689) produced a number of classic accounts of the various parts of the known world, including Africa (1668), China (1670), Persia (1672), and the Middle East (1681). The present work, carefully compiled from the accounts of Jesuit missionaries and explorers, as well as early writers such as Josephus and Eusebius, was translated into German by Jacob von Meursen, who also engraved the impressive illustrations.
