New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: (BOTANICAL WATERCOLORS.) French School [possibly of Nicholas Robert]. Tulips. Group of four finely executed watercolor and gouache drawings on vellum; two inscribed "Tulipe" in graphite on lower recto, two with ink inscriptions on verso, one dated 1670. Approximately 6 1/2x10 inches each leaf size; very minor soiling to vellum edges, one leaf with 1/2 inch of laid paper fixed to lower edge of verso. France, later part of the seventeenth century
Notes: With a letter from noted scholar Sam Segal describing a comparison of these works to an album of tulips by Nicolas Robert held by the Nationalbibliothek in Vienna: "I believe that the tulip with inscription ''Superbe Maunilin'' [present in this lot] on the reverse is possibly by Robert or one of his cooperators" ... "The other tulip is by a later hand, still 17th century and also French, very much in the style of Robert."
