Description: [Boxing interest] A silver coloured parcel gilt and maroon velvet boxing belt, unmarked, early 20th century, the four plaques as a boxing ring, two of single boxers with blue enamelled belts and the last of a sparring pair, divided by embroidery foliate motifs, within silver bullion borders, the buckle scroll engraved, 115cm (45 1/4in) long, in a glazed ebonised wall display case with backing fabric. Provenance: By direct descent through the family of Alfred John Squires (1868-1935), a well respected South London publican and boxing promoter. A member of Lynn Boxing Club, The Stadium Club and The National Sporting Club: Squires was best known as the backer of a number of fighters including the British Heavyweight Champion and Lonsdale belt holder Dick Smith.
