Lot 25: BRIET, PHILIPPE. Royaume du Japon.
December 6, 2012
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: BRIET, PHILIPPE. Royaume du Japon. Double-page engraved map, 380x525 mm, wide margins; hand-colored in outline; matted. Paris: Mariette, 1676
Notes: Patterned on the Blancus/Moreira model but with the addition of sectionalized names for parts of Honshu, which would be adapted by later French cartographers. Briet published atlases of his own in the 1640s and 1650s, but they did not contain this map of Japan. This is the second state of the map which is essentially the same as the first state (1658) but with some place names and name derivatives added. Though the map bears Briet's name, it appeared in a Sanson atlas published by Mariette. Walter 32; Cortazzi, pl. 67 (incorrectly dating the map to circa 1650).
