Atlanta, GA, USALive Auction
Description: Figural bronze sculpture of a veiled maiden with a scarab pendant, 20th century, after the model 'Nature Unveiling Herself Before Science' by Louis Ernest Barrias (French, 1841-1905) the whole rising on an incorporated plinth, 30"h x 13"w. The current lot is cast after an Art Nouveau style allegorical sculpture, La Nature se dévoilant à la Science in the French. Made at the turn of the century, the work is thought to depict Nature as a figure hiding her 'secrets' from science until her willing 'reveal,' brought on by the Scientific Revolution. The original sculpture resides in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and is comprised of marble, onyx and malachite.
