More About this Item

Description: 1923 BUKHARA. 5% Obligation de 25 Rbls. Serie 4. violet, black. A few tiny edge-tears and a little staining at the edges. The Bukharskaya Narodnaya Socialististeckaya Respublik existed from 1920 to 1925. It was basically a city state with Bukhara being the 5th largest city of today's Uzbekistan. The city, located onthe Silk Road, has a rich history as a center of trade, scholarship, culture and religion and its center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city has since a long time a very mixed population (ethnic Uzbek, native Tajiks, Jews,...). The text of this bond is in Uzbek language Arabic scrip, a novelty for the scripophily collector we believe. Bukhara was for a long time an Emirate (1785-1920), but as an Imperial Russian protectorate since 1873. In the summer of 1920, Turkestan Bolsheviksand young revolutionary Bukharans took control of Bukhara and proclaimed the Bukharan People's Soviet Republic. Contrary to the Russian Constitution of 1918, the new Republic allowed private ownership of land and productive assets as well as voting rights to non-proletarians. In 1925 new national boundaries were drawn in the Soviet Union, the Bukharan Soviet Rep. voted itself out of existence, and became part of the new Uzbek Soviet Republic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the historic Bukhara region lies mostly in Uzbekistan with parts in Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
