Description: BURROUGHS, EDGAR RICE. Tarzan of the Apes. Half-title. Pictorial title-page after Fred J. Arting. 8vo, original maroon cloth, front cover ruled in blind, front cover and spine lettered in gilt, light dustsoiling to top-edges, textblock leaning slightly, minor rubbing confined to gilt rule at spine foot; facsimile dust jacket; pencilled ownership inscription to front flyleaf, otherwise contents clean. Chicago: A.C. McClurg, 1914

Notes: first edition, first issue, with no "acorn" device on the spine, and the W. F. Hall imprint in Old English on the copyright page. The story first appeared in the pulp magazine The All-Story, vol. XXIV, no. 2 (October 1912). Remarkably clean, sound copy. Peter Parley to Penrod p.134; Zeuschner 696; Currey p. 93.
