Description: BURTON, Richard Francis. The Guide-Book. A Pictorial Guide Book to Mecca and Medina. (Including some of the more remarkable incidents in the life of Mohammed, the Arab lawgiver). London: Printed for the Author by William Clowes & Sons, 1865.

8 o (192 x 126 mm). Woodcut frontispiece portrait. Original printed light green wrapper, upper cover with short title and author's name, black ruled border with small floral device at corners (some light abrasions and staining to covers, chipping and splitting to backstrip); quarter morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. Provenance: H. Smith and Son (embossed blindstamp on lower cover).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS GREAT RARITY. Burton prepared and published this exceedingly rare pamphlet to accompany an exhibition of paintings arranged by the Royal Polytechnic Institution as a "Pictorial Representation" of his pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina to consist of "dissolving views" painted mostly from his original drawings. His text corrects errors he made in the 1855-56 first edition and contains an account of the main rites connected with the Hajj, and the life, death and burial of Mohammed. Penzer p. 76; Casada 39; Spink 37.
