Lot 20: Byzantine Cloisonne Ring
November 30, 2016
Boston, MA, USALive Auction
Description: This ancient ring has been reassembled in modern times - possibly when the original bezel was detached - by joining a reeded gold band with four gold granules (two on either side) to a circular flat roundel of the same period with floral design in red, blue, green and white cloisonne enamel. The cloisonne technique and colors are typical of that of jewelers of the Middle Byzantine period such as in this complex and delicate enamel decorating the little roundel in the ring.
