Description: 6th-7th century AD. A bronze oil lamp with discoid base, small discoid well and large nozzle with recess to the vent, openwork ivy-leaf handle with scrolled tendril detailing and knop finial, hinged scallop-shell lid. Cf. Bailey, D.M. A Catalogue of the Lamps in the British Museum. IV. Lamps of Metal and Stone and Lampstands, London, 1988, item Q3743 for lid type, Q3797 for handle. 422 grams, 18cm (7 1/4"). From a German collection; acquired on the German art market before 1990. [No Reserve]
