Possibly 9th century.
The ancient heavy band is fluted with two grooves that terminate at the flat face of the substantial ring, which is engraved with the busts of an imperial Byzantine couple on either side of a staff with cross finial. The woman has ornamental pendants (pendilia) hanging from her temples indicative of high status. Images of the emperor were widely dispersed across the Byzantine Empire in the form of coinage, and these types of royal portraits are reflected in this engraved image.
