Description: Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
"Landing of Gen. La Fayette at Castle Garden, New York 16th August 1824" Blue Historical Staffordshire Plate
c. 1824 Lafayette's Return Tour of America Period, "Landing of Gen. La Fayette at Castle Garden, New York 16th August 1824," Blue "CLEWS" Staffordshire Plate, England, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an original, gorgeous high quality Pearlware plate, measures 10.25" in diameter, with a central image of a group of ships and small boats outside the fort. The lower portion shows a six cannon salute to General Lafayette as he visits on his return tour of America. A floral border surrounds the central image. Reverse is imprinted with a crown surrounded by "CLEWS Warranted Staffordshire." Light actual wear to the interior and having overall excellent eye appeal that makes it excellent for display.
Castle Clinton, or Fort Clinton, was once known as Castle Garden, is a circular sandstone fort now located in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New York City. It is perhaps best remembered as America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the U.S. from 1855 to 1890. Over its active life, it has also functioned as a beer garden, exhibition hall, theater, public aquarium, and finally today as a national monument.
