Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 1 January 1863 HAINAUT. BRUXELLES/LONDON. Action de F500. black. #26000. No 6246. Two small holes, stamp-cancelled. Attractive share, with a flowery and architectural border, a train, little angels at work, figures of 'Industry', and much else. The company was formed in 1863, with British and Belgian capital, to build a 26km link between the Belgian state railway system at Marchienne-au-Pont and the French Nord system at Erquelinnes. This gave a through route from Paris to Germany. At the planned opening date, 1852, the line was far from complete, and the company could not afford the necessary materials. The French CdF du Nord leased the completed part of the line, and undertook to complete the work. This implied the liquidation of the company, and the shares became, in effect, obligations, Strip-cancelled. Signed by twodirectors, Laurent L. Mouton, a Paris industrialist with various interests in Hainaut, and A.W.Arnold, a London capitalist, also with interests in Hainaut industry.
