Chãteau de Busagny à Osny.
Drypoint and aquatint printed in dark brown on cream laid paper, 1887. 99x141 mm; 4x5 5/8 inches, full margins. Fourth state (of 4). One of approximately only 10 lifetime impressions in this state, there were approximately only 13 lifetime impressions in all four states combined. Signed and inscribed "Epreuve d'artiste" and "aquatinte" in ink, and titled and inscribed "no. 3" in pencil, lower margin. A brilliant, dark, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.
Pissarro added aquatint to this plate in the third and penultimate state and used it sparingly to softly darken the shadows and accentuate the play of sunlight through the landscape. In the fourth state, he touched up the foliage with drypoint.
The Chãteau de Busagny dates back to the mid-17th century, though was much enlarged during the early 1800s. It now serves as the base for a private school.
Pissarro painted several versions of the Osny landscape with this distant view of the Château (Pissarro/Snollaerts 746, Le Château de Busagny, Osny, 1884, now in a private collection, Tokyo). Delteil 71.
