November 3, 2016
New York, NY, USALive Auction
Marché à Pontoise.
Lithograph printed in black on cream wove paper, 1895. 307x230 mm; 12 1/8x9 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). One of approximately only 20 lifetime impressions in this state, from a total of approximately 45 lifetime impressions in all three states combined. Titled and inscribed "1e etat no. 1" in pencil, lower margin. A superb, richly-inked impression of this very scarce lithograph.
This is one of Pissarro's largest and most complex lithographs. It echoes the composition of his earlier oil, Le Marché à la volaille, Pontoise, 1882, now in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena. Delteil 147.
