Description: CANDIDE ou l'optimisme, traduit de l'allemand de Mr. le Docteur Ralph. S. l. Paris, Lambert, 1759 ; in-12, basane brune, dos à nerfs orné de caissons et fleurons dor., pièce de t. en mar. rouge, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque). 237 (1) pp., 1 f., la p. 161 chiffrée 261. Première édition française parue quelques jours après l'originale de Genève. Les bibliographes du XIXe siècle tenaient cette édition pour l'originale. C'est Bengesco et Morize qui, les premiers, ont donné l'édition de Cramer pour l'originale sans fournir d'argument en faveur de cette attribution. Cette affirmation est demeurée incontestée jusqu'en 1933, date de la parution de l'article de Jean Tannery et Norman L. Torrey qui ont tenté de nouveau de faire valoir que l'édition Lambert est antérieure à celle de Cramer, en apportant pour preuve des notes de Voltaire adressées à Cramer au sujet de Candide et qui laissent supposer que l'ouvrage avait déjà paru chez un autre éditeur. C'est Bernard Gagnebin, en 1952, qui apporte la preuve indiscutable de l'antériorité de l'édition genevoise. Il trouve en effet une note de Cramer du 15 janvier 1759 indiquant qu'il a expédié des exemplaires de Candide. Il semble cependant, d'après une lettre d'Omer Joly de Fleury datée de février 1759, que le premier exemplaire de Candide parvenu à la censure soit de l'édition Lambert. Cette édition aurait donc paru alors que l'édition suisse n'était pas encore en circulation à Paris. Il semble en effet que les éditions Lambert et Cramer ont été faites d'après des manuscrits différents.
