A hermit in a wintery landscape, oil on canvas laid down on cardboard, 16 x 11.5 cm, framed, (Wo)

Carus, a painter of Romanticism, was also a natural scientist and professor of obstetrics. In this latter function we was called to Dresden as the personal phycisian to the royal family. What he wrote about his artist friend Caspar David Friedrich also applied, cum grano salis, to himself: "With an austere melancholy he created a distinct and new poetry out of the mass of triviality and staleness”.
