CARVED KNIGHT AND HORSE.
Attributed to Florence, Italy, late 15th century. Two life-size figures of pieced wooden construction featuring pegged butterflies covered with layers of gesso and paint. Nobleman wearing Gothic armor once held a lance. His palfrey has drilled holes for a bit. Wear and some repair. Horse is 16 hands high. 87"h. 76"w. 53"d. overall. Purchased from French & Co., New York, in 1960.
One eye on horse replaced. Paint is most likely early 20th century with areas of flaking and gesso loss. Numerous butterfly joints.
