New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: (CELESTIALS - MUGGLETONIAN.) Frost, Isaac. Series of 6 plates representing the geocentric Muggletonian astronomical theory. Plates 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, and 10 (as usually numbered), engraved and printed in oil colors by W.P. Clubb & Son. 4to sheets, each approximately 10x12 1/2 inches sheet size, minor browning to very edges, a genuinely nice set. [London: G. Baxter, 1846]
Notes: Scarce set of prints relating to the history of the relationship between religion and science. The Muggletonians were a small religious sect begun by Lodowicke Muggleton in 1651 who, among other curious beliefs, refuted modern scientific views on the order of the universe and rejected Newtonian physics. The present set of engravings compare heliocentric astronomy (plates 1, 3, & 6 - Newtonian System) to that of a geocentric basis (plates 7, 9 & 10 - System According to the Holy Scriptures), a theory the Muggletonians adhered to and which Frost refined and illustrated here for members of the sect.
