FIRST EDITION of a work which "explores four interrelated themes: the religious and secular culture of the Second Golden Age of the Byzantine Empire; the empire's interaction with its Christian neighbors and rivals; its relations with the Islamic East; and its contact with the Latin West" (from the turn-in). INSCRIBED BY PRINCE CHARLES on the half title, "For dear old Derek, With affection and best wishes from Charles, 1997." Derek Hill CBE (1916-2000) was a renowned Anglo-Irish painter, Director of the British School in Rome, and an expert on Islamic art and architecture. He tutored Prince Charles in art when he was a young man and went on to paint his portrait twice.
