[Paris, Précy-sur-Oise, etc. , 17 mars 1828-26 ou 27 mai 1840]. Ens. 31 p. in-12 et in-8 (dimensions diverses), et suscriptions.

Correspondance du critique, poète et romancier Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve à Alfred de Vigny. Elle permet de mieux appréhender ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler la "fausse amitié" (Ernest Dupuy) qui unit les deux hommes de lettres, lesquels étaient entrés en relation dès 1827-1828 par l'intermédiaire semble-t-il de Victor Hugo qui fut d'ailleurs le voisin de Sainte-Beuve rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs : "Que vous êtes bon, Monsieur, de vous êtes souvenu de moi et d'avoir pensé que le présent de vos premiers poèmes me serait agréable. Je ne les connaissais pas tous ; j'avais lu la Prison dans les Tablettes Romantiques, & notre cher Victor m'avait récité les derniers vers si gracieux et si folâtres de Symétha, & le passage de Jephté, où se trouve cette belle coupe "… permettez seulement", mais ni le Bal si éblouissamment beau, si amèrement triste, ni le Bain de Suzanne auquel on ne peut comparer que le Bain d'une jeune Romaine, ni cette mystérieuse Dryade et la bacchante Ida aux cheveux noirs, & la blonde et pudique Prêtresse, je ne connaissais rien de tout cela, Monsieur. " ([17 mars 1828] ; c'est la première lettre connue de Sainte-Beuve à Vigny) ; "Croyez à mon admiration pour vos talents, à mon respect pour toutes vos nobles qualités, à mon équité pour le reste, et aussi à mon désir d'une parfaite, sauvage et à peu près irréconciliable indépendance" ([26 ou 27 mars 1840], en réponse à une lettre de Vigny se plaignant de l'oubli de son nom dans un article de Sainte-Beuve intitulé "Dix ans après en littérature").

Alfred de VIGNY. 1797-1863. Réunion de deux minutes autographes signées de lettres à Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve. [Paris], 19 octobre 1835, 26 mai 1840. Ens. 7 p. in-8. Dans la première lettre, Vigny remercia chaleureusement Sainte-Beuve pour un article qu'il publia sur lui dans la Revue des deux mondes le 15 octobre 1835. La seconde minute est celle de la lettre évoquée plus haut sur un autre article de Sainte-Beuve.
On joint en outre un joli billet réunissant l'écriture des deux hommes ([Paris, 20 avril 1858] ; 1 p. in-8). Sainte-Beuve écrit à Vigny : "Je vous ai revu. J'ai été touché. Les personnes qui étaient avec moi dans la loge, & plus jeunes que moi, ont été non moins touchées, & se sont plus d'une fois écriées : "Que c'est bien ! Que c'est élevé !". J'en étais fier pour la génération dont les chefs ont produit de telles œuvres !" et Vigny note en dessous : "Ce mot envoyé par Ste Beuve pendant la séance le 20 avril 1858 m'est écrit après avoir revu Chatterton aux Français".
Quelques manques, déchirures et pliures marginaux, certains atteignant le texte. Quelques brunissures et trous d'épingles.
