Summer Flowers, Capri signed with initials in monogram, dated and inscribed 'CCC Capri 1906' (lower right) oil on canvas 21 x 411/2 in. (53.3 x 105.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Estate of Rose O'Neill. Private collection, 1952. By descent in the family to the present owner. EXHIBITION Indianapolis, Indiana, John Herron Art Institute, March-April 1907 (probably) NOTES The present work depicts the Anacapri region of the Italian island Capri. In the distance, Coleman has painted the island of Iscia on the left, and to the right, the eruption of Vesuvius. Coleman and fellow artist Elihu Vedder both resided on Capri for several years, inspired by the island's unique landscape and poetic history.
