This work depicts an incident from Victor Hugo's last novel, Quatrevingt-treize (Ninety-three) of 1874, which takes place in France during the counter-revolutionary Chouannerie revolt in 1793. Here a young mother, Michelle Flechard, and her children are discovered hiding in a wood by "Blues" (French Republican soldiers), who take the fugitives in and protect them.
Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Scattered inpainting: upper right corner; top center; lower left corner; few spots in center and around the woman's feet. A few other small scattered spots.
