One of the principal early artists of American modernism, Charles Demuth studied at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He made significant trips in Europe in 1907-08, 1912-14, and 1921, where he associated with Ezra Pound, Gertrude and Leo Stein in the avant-garde circles of Paris. Dating to 1913, this painting is an excellent example of Demuth's work in Europe. While best known for precisionist landscapes and delicate watercolor still lifes, this work is a rare oil painting which captures the spirit of Fauvism with its bold color and foreshortened use of space.
