Charles-Louis Muller worked primarily as a history and genre painter and gained widespread recognition following his successful exhibitions at the Paris Salon of Heliogabulus (1841), Primavera (1846) and La Ronde de Mai (1847). The present work proved to be particularly popular with the public and the image was widely circulated in the form of a lithograph. There are two other known versions of this composition by Muller: a watercolour (sold in these rooms on 23 November 1978, lot 134) and a smaller oil reduction measuring 77 by 105 cm., formerly in the collection of Daniel Powers (sold at Sotheby's New York, 27 May 1982, lot 104).
