Description: Chippendale walnut desk-and-bookcase

The upper case with swan''s neck pediment above arched paneled doors opening to shelves and two candle slides; the lower case with slant-front opening to an elaborate fitted interior with carved prospect door above four drawers, on ogival bracket feet.

H: 95, W: 38, D: 22 in.

PROVENANCE:

The Estate of Andre and Nancy Brewster, Maryland.

Condition Report: This piece is an amalgam of separate parts-- bookcase upper half is not flush with the desk bottom half; these pieces are married. The desk has nicely finished walnut on the top, which implies that it originated solely as a desk. The bookcase doors are old, but have been later applied to the bookcase (the hinges are replacements). One raised panel on the bookcase has some splitting due to age, and there is some splitting and a crack on the slant door of the desk. The slant door is warped, as it is not flush when closed. The pull-out desk door supports have loosened over time, and there are visible nail reinforcements applied from the outside. The desk feet are replacements. The interior of the desk does not show significant alteration. The brasses are all replacements (but may be old) and have been newly polished.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.
