Chloé (est. 1952)

In 1952 dressmaker Gaby Aghion (1921-2014) founded a fashion company together with the entrepreneur Jacques Lenoir. Aghion, who had named the company after a friend, quickly became successful with playful feminine fashion from soft, flowing and high-quality fabrics. In 1963 Karl Lagerfeld was appointed chief designer; he had this position until 1983 and again later. The first Parisian boutique opened in 1971. Numerous celebrities were among Chloé’s clientele, including Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy. In the 1970s the company grew to become one of Europe’s leading women's fashion brands. In 1985 Chloé was bought by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. due to declining sales. Finally, in 1993 Dunhill merged with Cartier to Groupe Vendôme and was bought in 1998 by the Swiss company Richemont, to which Chloé still belongs today. Stella McCartney helped the company achieve new success from 1997 to 2001, she started the lower-priced second-line See by Chloé. Under her successor Phoebe Philo, too, the fashion brand again received great popularity. Current head designer is Claire Waight Keller.
