Colonial Notes Printed by B. Franklin
Choice May 1, 1758 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Printed Delaware Colonial Currency Paper Money Note Rarity
Delaware. May 1, 1758. Fifteen Shillings. "Horse" vignette. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Printed Issue. Very Fine.
Fr. DE-59. This superior quality French & Indian War period Delaware Colonial note was "Printed by B. FRANKLIN" as its typeset printed text at the lower margin on the reverse states. It has some overall light conservation primarily to the centerfolds and has a very even, clean yet circulated appearance that is very attractive for display. It is well centered on both its face and back with nice full margins. The text and designs are clear and sharp, including the May first 1758 date and "Horse" vignette. Only two DE-59 notes have been certified by PMG, the finest is Fine-15. We previously sold two examples; EAHA Auction June 26, 2015, Lot 137 graded Fine with conservation selling for $1,560 and August 22, 2014, Lot 216 graded About VF with conservation selling for $2,125. This current example is also significantly finer in quality and eye appeal than the plate note shown illustrated in Newman, "The Early Paper Money of America" on page 123. Quite rare and pleasing.
