More About this Item

Description: These are two early hand carved wooden treen eating spoons from New England circa 1700's. Wooden Spoons were items listed in the inventories of early settlers in America (in Jamestown and on the Mayflower) in the early 1600's. In fact wooden eating and cooking implements were often the items enterprising Indians sold to those early colonists. Wooden eating and cooking implements were used by both rich and poor for nearly all of the first century of American colonization. The shorter spoon is carved from maple wood and has a large bowl shape with a short wide penny style handle end. The longer spoon is made of cherry wood and the grained ring detail can be seen on the back of the spoon. There is a decorative double carved incise on the long handle and it tapers nicely. There are inactive worm holes.
Dimensions: Cherry wood spoon is 7 inches long and the maple wood spoon is 6 inches long.
Date: 1700s
Condition Report: Excellent condition except for a hairline drying crack (see photos).
