October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
The offered complete set of eight full-color, U.S. lobby cards for the MGM film Jailhouse Rock is one of the finest collectors will ever see. Assembling complete sets can be a frustrating exercise due to widely varying condition aspects, but this set exhiibits none of the distresses that normally plague artifacts for such a popular film. Seven of the lobby cards feature a full-color image of Elvis in a scene from the movie, and the title card presents its unique variation of the iconic marketing images for the film.
Jailhouse Rock stars Elvis as Vince Everett, a tough character who is jailed for manslaughter and discovers his singing abilities while in lock-up. The story follows Vince's rough and tumble rise to stardom once he is released, and it wouldn't be an Elvis film without a love interest who prevails to capture Vince's devotion in the end. The film peaked at number three on the Variety charts and grossed over $4 million. The movie was released to mixed reviews but has become such a classic that in 2004 it was selected for the U.S. National Film Registry. These lobby cards, which capture Elvis in a pivotal career role, each measure approximately 11 by 14 inches (27.94 x 35.56 cm) and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The cards present in very clean condition, with bright, bold colors and minimal wear to a few of the corners. Near Mint condition overall.
