Description: 1854 PARIS. Action de F500. black. #160000. No 110582. The bank was formed in 1848, to help to put right the crisis caused by the revolution of that year. In the 1850s it grew rapidly, opening offices in India, China, Japan, London and Alexandria, and later in Australia and U.S.A. It contributed to the formation of many colonial banks (e.g. Banque de l'Indochine) and opposed the domination of the Rothschilds. The bank invested heavily in Portuguese and American railroads, the Panama Canal and other major public works. Due to a misfortunate speculation in copper, the bank got into financial difficulties in the late 1880s. In 1889 its affairs were taken over by a new bank, the Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris, and this bank was liquidated; this latter bank was one of the two banks which merged to form today's Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP). Signed as directeur by Denfert Rochereau, after whom an important Paris metro station is named.
