*CONSTANT TROYON FRENCH, 1810-65 PANORAMIC LANDSCAPE WITH A VIEW OF A DISTANT CITY stamped Vente Troyon (lower right) oil on canvas 26 by 32in. 66 by 81.3cm. Troyon began his career as a porcelain painter. By the late 1830s he turned his attention to landscape painting and submitted views of Saint-Cloud and Sevres to the Salons. These early landscapes depicted the terrain around the state porcelain works, an area well-known to Troyon. They were often characterized by bright colors based on Troyon's experience in working with porcelain glazes. It has been suggested that the city depicted in the present painting is Paris.
